There’s been a lot of talk of purgatory on Supernatural over the years. If you recall, it ramped up a lot in Supernatural Season 7 DVD.
In the season 7 finale, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) – with the help of Castiel (Misha Collins) – killed the Big Bad Leviathan, Dick Roman, which inadvertently banished both Dean and Castiel to Purgatory (from whence the Leviathan came).
This episode in Supernatural Season 7 is a really good stand alone. No Leviathan references or link to the ongoing story with the exception of one of the town people recognising the brothers from the crime spree that happened last episode. There is some really funny stuff here with all the psychics. Dean also receives a message via a psychic from Ellan who warns him that unless he says how bad it is “she will kick his ass from beyond”. Sam also has a great moment where he busts in on a Lamaze class.
Dean clawed his way out of his own grave after being sent to hell in the finale. So part of me guesses we won’t begin season 8 in the same way. I’m thinking there won’t be an angel who rides him out of purgatory. But what will happen?
There is very little angelic activity in that season. At the last episode of season 7 Dean and Castiel were trapped in the purgatory. The season 7 finished and people were sure of one thing that Supernatural Season 8 is coming.
Additionally, ‘Supernatural’ season 8 will see the return of DJ Qualls’ eccentric hunter Garth, as well as ‘Futurama’ voice Lauren Tom. Liane Balaban (‘Alphas,’ ‘Covert Affairs’) will appear as Sam’s new love interest Amelia, developed in the time the brothers spent separated.
Supernatural can find its stride and get back to being one of the more consistently entertaining shows on television. Never miss the new Supernatural season.
